Weather Mysteries: The Moscow Halo Cloud

The strange, shining cloud that was sighted above Moscow caused a lot of curiosity and some concern but what exactly could have caused it?

A strange cloud with an unusual shape was spotted in the skies above Moscow, Russia. This phenomenon has been dubbed a ‘halo cloud’ for its similarity in appearance to that of a halo. This halo is kind of big however. Big both in size and in the amount of attention it has received.

Described as everything from a UFO to a sign of the apocalypse, the cloud has stirred admiration, awe and curiosity worldwide. What are the explanations for this phenomenon?

It’s said by some to be meteorological in origin, like the Aurora Borealis and ball lightning (luminous, moving balls which have been observed during thunderstorms). Here are some weather facts to help you draw your own conclusion.

  • The sky gets brighter around clouds. Over several years, satellites have measured halos around clouds, which extend as far as 9 miles away from the clouds.
  • Clouds behave like mirrors in the sky. They reflect sunlight and create a halo effect around them.
  • Clouds actually cool the earth by reflecting solar energy back into space. Even when the sky appears to be cloudless, particles in the sky are still present, reflecting energy back into the sky.
  • Sometimes, large circular gaps appear in clouds. These gaps are called fallstreak holes. They occur in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds.

When the halo cloud appeared, there was atmospheric interference caused by cold air from the Arctic region. Several cold fronts had also passed through Moscow around that time.

Giving Aid Amidst Cultural Differences After Disasters

In China, in May, 2008, over 200 aid workers repairing damaged roads after an earthquake, were buried in the mudslides that followed.

Added to this, is the fact that the supply of clean water is usually limited, in the days immediately following a serious earthquake, hurricane or other natural disaster. This increases the possibility, of acquiring diarrhoeal illnesses, such as E. coli, entamoeba and Giardia.



Humanitarian workers may even face harm due to cultural differences. In Sudan, aid workers were attacked by police in January, while they were celebrating a day off, with dining, drinking and dancing. Sudanese officials say that aid workers and members of the U.N. staff, will be held accountable, for breaking Sudanese law.

Relief workers often return home, having endured the same mental trauma as a veteran of war. This happens because of the frequency with which they undertake difficult, dangerous tasks and neglect food, sleep and personal care, in the race to decrease fatalities.

Plants that Fix Nitrogen - Nitrogen Fixing Plants List

Plants that fix nitrogen play an essential role in agriculture.

They serve as hosts for nitrogen fixing bacteria like Rhizobium, which trap Nitrogen in the soil and make it available to be used by plants which do not have these microorganisms.

Where are Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria Found?

All plants need Nitrogen to grow and bear fruit well. It is a building block of amino acids. However plants cannot all make this essential element. Those that cannot make it must rely on bacteria that live in nodules that are located on the roots of plants that provide a good habitat for them to survive in. These plants capture the element and make NH3, which plants can absorb. They also leave it in the soil for other plants to use. In this way, they enrich the dirt.

Why are Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria Important?

Although nitrogen is one of the gases that is present in the atmosphere, plants cannot use it in this form. They cannot properly utilize the element as a gas. Nitrogen fixing plants are able to draw nitrogen into the soil, which is where they and other flora can properly employ it.

Plants may also get nitrogen from inorganic fertilizer. Some persons who have access to chicken manure may also add this to the soil in order to give their plants more of the essential nutrients that they require to form leaves and fruit.

Many plants that fix nitrogen are legumes, for example corn is a popular nitrogen fixing plant. Peas and beans also fix this element in the soil. Many of the plants that have this property are edible and several are attractive to look at and are used as ornamental plants.

The following are plants that fix nitrogen:
Ceanothus- ceanothus does not grow taller than around 4 feet. It can also be used medicinally to treat sore throats and sores.
Pea shrub-these plants like a lot of sun
Alfalfa
Clover
Peanuts
Red beans
Soy beans
Alder-this tree grows to about 25 feet and people use its branches and twigs to make baskets

The Australian Bushland - Australia's Outback

The Australian bushland is located along Australia’s Gold Coast. The bush is known all over the world and it is very special to the people who call Australia home. There are several beautiful retreats that are set in the area. Families who can enjoy time there are treated to a myriad of breathtaking scenes on a daily basis.

The Australian bushland is home to a lot of unique plants and animals. These species thrive in the different habitats that can be found in the bushland. The bush is also a great place for people to relax. Houses that built there provide priceless hours of time away from stress for the occupants.

Although the homes are private and are located away from the city, access to electricity and phones is usually available. People who stay there can see wild creatures such as kangaroos and sugar gliders. You can also see all kinds of birds, in addition to koalas and echidnas.

If you are interested in historic sites, there is also a lot to see. Ancient aboriginal dwellings are there, as are tools and rock structures. In times past, Aboriginal guides with exceptional tracking skills became legends in the minds of European Australians. For Indigenous Australians, intimate knowledge of the land is tied in to their spiritual beliefs.

For many years, the poets, writers and painters of Australian origin have used the bush to help express national identity. Contemporary, music, clothing, architecture and even slang all contain references to the Australian bushland.

The Moringa plant is well known for its health properties. It is also known as the Sajina tree in some parts of the world. The roots, leaves and other parts of the tree are used extensively throughout Asia and the Caribbean. it has also become popular in other parts of the world.

It is rich in vitamins, such as Vitamin C and Vitamin A. It is also a good source of protein. This has made it a good source of essential nutrients in areas where it is hard to grow other crops.

The moringa or horseradish tree is also used for the following:
1. Water clarification
2. Lumber
3. Charcoal
4. Lubricating oil

It is also used for fencing in several areas. In some countries, its use in building is better known than in others. For example, in Jamaica, other types of wood, such as mahogany and pine, are more popular.

The Uses of Coal Ash

Coal ash from coal burnt as fuel has been described as both an environmental danger and an environmental asset. Renewable energy sources are often pushed as the answer to fuel sources such as coal. It may help to know more about why people take these opposing views.

Recently there was a fuel coal ash spill in Kingston, Tennessee. The coal ash involved measured 5.4 million cubic yards.
This has raised some questions about the safety of fuel coal ash and also caused some people to ask, “Where might I find coal ash without being aware of it?”

The answers may surprise you, as coal ash may be in your carpet or under your golf course.
When coal is burnt for fuel, one of the byproducts is coal ash. So it stands to reason that as long as we use coal as a source of fuel, we will have to think about ways in which the ash can be utilized properly.

Coal: Opposing Viewpoints

 
There are three types of coal ash. These are:
  • Fly ash
  • Bottom ash
  • Boiler slag
Fly ash accounts for approximately 74% of the ash generated. Fly ash and other residue may be stored in a coal ash impoundment. A coal ash impoundment may contain millions of tons of coal ash.
A team from the University of Pittsburgh will conduct a study in the summer of 2010, to determine whether toxic chemicals are being leached from the coal ash impoundment at Little Blue, West Virginia, U.SA, into the water table. The study will utilize well water testing.

Well water testing can be used to determine the effects of coal ash on the groundwater in an area that is at risk of contamination. Homeowners who experience a coal ash spill in their area, or live in the vicinity of a coal ash impoundment and have private drinking water supplies, may use well water testing to ensure that their water supply is safe.

Coal ash is not yet regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), even though it contains mercury, arsenic and lead, which are all toxic substances. Instead each of the United States is responsible for conducting regulation of the ash it produces. However the EPA does approve the use of coal ash in construction.
In 1996 approximately 22% of the fly ash produced was used for construction.



Its construction applications are many:
  • It’s used for making cement and concrete products
  • It’s used in structural fills and embankments
  • It’s used as mineral filler in asphalt pavement
  • It’s used to stabilize waste materials
  • It’s used to level out uneven terrain on sites including housing developments, malls and runways.
To be used in this way, coal ash must meet certain requirements.
For example, in Portland Cement Concrete, fly ash must meet the standards of ASTM C618. The ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials.
The ash used to produce Portland cement actually allows some cutbacks in using oil. It would have taken 55 gallons to produce one ton of cement.

Coal ash has also been found useful in the making of:
  • Paints and plastics
  • Kitchen countertops
  • Soil for growing plants. It increases crop yields.
  • Bowling balls
  • Vinyl flow covering
  • Shower stalls
Studies have been conducted to determine the safety of some but not all, of these applications.
Green energy is being pushed as an alternative source of energy. Green energy from renewable energy resources is preferred to energy from non renewable energy resources like oil and coal.
Green energy sources include solar energy and wind energy. Green energy is also derived from geothermal power. Tide energy is also being used as a source of green energy.
